Sweet Innovations in Vienna – Week 2 of EntreComp4Transition Student Mobility

Greetings from Vienna!

Two weeks into our EntreComp4Transition experience, our team of students has been working hands-on with Zuckerlwerkstatt GmbH, a company where history and craftsmanship come to life in the form of delicious, handmade sweets. Our challenge? Helping them embrace a greener and more digital future while preserving their rich tradition.

The students: A strong team with a shared vision

Our diverse group of students – from Austria, Belgium, Italy, Spain, and Türkiye – has quickly found its rhythm in a real business environment. With expertise in sustainability, entrepreneurship, e-commerce, and business strategy, each member brings valuable insights to the table. Rather than just conducting research, with guidance from one of our exceptional Austrian trainers, they are actively creating practical solutions that could have a meaningful impact on the company.

What stands out the most? Their team spirit and efficiency. Highly organized and focused, they collaborate seamlessly, turning ideas into action with impressive effectiveness. And along the way, they are enjoying every step of the journey – especially when it involves tasting a few extra sweets (for research, of course!).

The Company: Zuckerlwerkstatt – Crafting sweet stories with heart

The Zuckerlwerkstatt is a unique Viennese candy manufactory specializing in handmade, traditional Austrian sweets. Each piece is crafted with care using time-honored recipes and 100% natural ingredients – without artificial flavors or shortcuts. Visitors can experience the magic firsthand during live candy-making demonstrations, where skilled artisans bring cherished techniques to life, offering an authentic taste of Austrian tradition.

The team at Zuckerlwerkstatt has been incredibly welcoming and engaged with our students. From sharing insights into their craft to discussing the challenges of modernizing while staying true to tradition, they have actively involved themselves in our project. We are truly grateful for their participation and support.

As part of the EntreComp4Transition initiative, Zuckerlwerkstatt is working with the students to explore the Twin Transition – a dual focus on green and digital transformation. Like many small, family-run businesses, they face the challenge of balancing heritage with modern demands. They are exploring ways to embrace both green and digital transitions, reduce their environmental footprint, and implement innovative, sustainable practices – all while maintaining the traditional craftsmanship that defines their artisanal candy. Their dedication to quality and innovation makes them an inspiring partner for this exciting journey toward a greener, more digital future.

The task: A sweeter, greener and more digital future

Zuckerlwerkstatt already stands as a shining example of craftsmanship, tradition, and sustainability. Over the past two weeks, our mission has been to explore how this iconic company can continue to evolve while remaining true to its roots.

While Zuckerlwerkstatt is already leading in sustainability, our students conducted an in-depth analysis of its practices to identify even more opportunities for growth in this area. They also focused on ways the company can enhance its digital presence, ensuring it reaches a wider audience in today’s fast-paced digital world. Additionally, our team generated creative ideas for business expansion, exploring strategies to increase reach, tap into new markets, and boost the brand’s visibility – while maintaining the core values that make Zuckerlwerkstatt unique.

The next step is to evaluate all the ideas, finalize the selected twin transition solution, and prepare for a presentation to the company. While there is still work to be done, seeing their ideas take shape is exciting, and the potential to create a meaningful impact makes it even more rewarding.

Exploring Vienna: Embracing the local culture

In addition to our work with Zuckerlwerkstatt, our international team had the chance to truly immerse ourselves in the vibrant heart of Vienna, both individually and as a group.

We kicked things off with an Austrian breakfast, setting the tone for the adventure ahead. The following week, we delved into the city – steering clear of the usual tourist spots and discovering its hidden treasures. We explored the lesser-known corners of Vienna, uncovering the kind of gems that are not found in guidebooks. This journey revealed the perfect blend of Vienna’s timeless charm and its forward-thinking innovation.

It has been a fantastic way to unwind, strengthen our team bond, and fully embrace the city’s unique culture. Our students are excited to keep exploring as our project continues to unfold.

Stay tuned for our next update from Vienna!
